The 2016 US presidential election and the subsequent political climate has taken an observable toll on the mental health of many of us. This has been addressed in several publications including:

The New York Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/29/well/how-to-follow-the-news-in-a-poli...

Our analysis of dreams leading up to and since the election offers evidence of this issue. A increase in anxiety related dreams can be seen immediately after the election. The graph below shows this increase.

When we look at the content of these dreams, many of them relate to the current US president and his actions. It is interesting to see the wide variety of ways that dreams can reflect this kind of anxiety. Some of the dreams are lighthearted, while some are very dark. Lets take a look at some examples from the week surrounding the election:

"had a vivid dream last night that i came out to my aunt & uncle who are evangelical conservative. it was too real. election anxiety anyone?"

This dream shows directly how the perceived shift in social norms from a culture of acceptance to a culture of discrimination impacts somebody on a directly personal level.

"that was the most stressful dream I ever had lmao wtf I had to stop some weird bald headed evil man from throwing a baby out of a window"

This dream may not be directly related to the election. However it should be easy for any sane person to see that it could be symbolically related.

"Im having some anxiety over this election. I had a dream last night that Donald Trump fired me because I said I make better tacos then him"

This dream shows somebody having a dream that portrays their anxiety in a more mundane and lighthearted way.

"i genuinely had a dream that the world was ending last night...im not even american and thats how scared i am"

This dream portrays somebody with fear for the safety of the world having a very foreboding dream.
